113 books, works, and films being considered for the Open Shelf's new language doors, listed here before anything is decided. Potential resources, not recommendations yet. Whether they belong is a question for the people who live in these languages, and this page is where they answer it.
How this works
Each entry came onto the list on October 28, 2026 from a search of the King County and Seattle library catalogs, with a summary in our words and the doors to borrow it. Some we have read. Many we know only from the catalog, and those say so. None belongs to the Open Shelf until a person from the community says it does.
If you live in one of these languages, or in the lives these books describe, read what we wrote and tell us: recommend it, not for us, or not sure, and why, in your own words. A sentence is enough. When you recommend a book, you are allowing us to add your words to its description, signed with your first name, a line like a father in Kent, or no name at all, as you choose. Name a book or film we missed; a title is enough and we will find the door.
A person reads every review, and nothing you write appears here unread. When a community reader says a thing belongs and the steward agrees, it takes its card on the Open Shelf under its language door, and its entry here says so and on whose word. When the community says not for us, it is set aside and the reason is kept. The list stays open, and the responsibility for what sits on the shelf is shared: yours as much as ours.

Seven candidates from the Lebanese and Emirati houses that carry the best current Arabic children's publishing (Dar al-Hadaek, Dar Asala, Kalimat). Why it might belong: a grandmother's object carried by a child.
For grown-ups · the parent's own shelf · belovedness
A guide to children's emotional needs written in Arabic rather than translated, the only Arabic-language parenting book by an Arab author either library holds. It leans practical rather than reflective, so it should be read before it is shelved. Everything else in Arabic for parents in both systems is a translation (Spock, Covey, and the like).
Why it might belong: the parent's own shelf should speak Arabic in an Arab voice, and this is the one candidate.
Nearly every Amharic children's book in both libraries comes from Ready Set Go Books, the Seattle project of Open Hearts Big Dreams, printed side by side in Amharic and English, and many of the same titles exist in Tigrinya and Afaan Oromoo editions. The six below are the ones written or illustrated by Ethiopians, with one exception flagged. No Amharic-language book for parents is held by either library; that gap is the first thing to ask the community about.

Neurodiversity and disability, from inside each community
## Neurodiversity and disability, from inside each community
For the Through Other Windows wing, which holds books by autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, Deaf, blind, and physically disabled writers, and by parents and siblings from inside those lives, never a condition described from outside or a method for sale. Each work carries a tier: 1, in the language by a disabled or neurodivergent writer, or a parent or sibling from the community; 2, in the language from the community with the disability community involved; 3, a translation of a well-regarded own-voices book; 4, an English-language own-voices work by a diaspora writer where nothing exists in the language. Books with a disabled protagonist by an outside author are listed only where nothing else exists, and marked so.
The plain finding first. Own-voices writing in these languages exists in Taiwan (autism memoirs), in Ukraine (an inclusive-books wave since 2017, with three disabled or parent authors confirmed), and in Hindi (two works, one on a KCLS shelf). In Arabic the two confirmed own-voices works are small-press and unavailable here. In Amharic, Tigrinya, Oromo, and Telugu nothing by a disabled writer could be found at all. The libraries hold almost none of the home-language own-voices titles; the strong borrowable books are in English, by diaspora writers. Suggest-a-purchase at both libraries is a real door.

One call to Open Hearts Big Dreams in Seattle would settle whether any author is disabled, and that answer decides the four series titles.

## Film and television, for the steward's review
Candidates for the Film Shelf, found October 28, 2026. Two emphases: childhood, family, grandparents, and home told from inside the culture, and disability told with dignity, with a note on whether disabled or neurodivergent people took part in the making. Written with the Maharashtra Dyslexia Association and dyslexic children. About nine and up with an adult; a child shamed and hit by teachers, sent away, a long wordless depression.

R. S. Prasanna, 2025, Hindi, 158 min, UA 13+
Thirteen by certificate; fine at ten with a parent;
A remake of the Spanish Champions: a disgraced coach serves community service training a basketball team of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Stated plainly, the protagonist is the non-disabled coach and the closing beat is that the players taught him, the inspiration shape. What rescues it is the cast: ten first-time actors with lived experience of autism, Down syndrome, and Fragile X, found through some 2,500 introductions and given names, jokes, households, and wants of their own. Thirteen by certificate; fine at ten with a parent; drunk driving, a strained marriage, the coach's early contempt.
was on YouTube Movies in the US from August 2025; now could not be confirmed; nothing at either library.

Shonali Bose with Nilesh Maniyar, 2014, Hindi and English, 100 min
Sixteen and up;
Laila, a Delhi student with cerebral palsy, wins a place at NYU, falls for a blind activist, and comes home to a dying mother. The clearest case here of the disabled person as subject, not lesson; drawn from the director's cousin Malini Chib, a disability-rights activist with CP, who was consulted; the lead is non-disabled, after a search for an actress with CP failed. Sixteen and up; a sex scene, bisexual romance, drinking, a mother's death.
Stanley, a popular fourth-grader in a Mumbai school, is the only boy who never brings a lunchbox, and the children's economy of shared tiffins becomes the whole world. Shot in a real school across a year and a half of Saturday workshops. Eight and up; the ending reveals he is an orphan working in his uncle's restaurant, with a burn scar; the uncle hits him once.
Apple TV rent, listed as Stanley's Tiffin Box; no library record.

All ages;
R. K. Narayan's stories, above all Swami and Friends, as a boy's life in a small town: grandmother, lawyer father, cricket, running away. The older landmark Indian families rewatch. All ages; occasional caning at school.
Amazon Video US by purchase; a YouTube posting from 2014 may still stand; the libraries hold the book, not the series.

All ages.
Jaipur, summer 1998, narrated by twelve-year-old Harshu: a strict mother, an easygoing father, an older brother, a little sister, the Sachin-era vacation. The plainest answer to childhood and home from inside. All ages.
could not confirm US availability; season one first ran on TVF's YouTube channel.
Set aside: Dhanak (cure-shaped, sighted actor), Hichki, Black, My Name Is Khan (teacher as lesson, cure melodrama, diagnosis as device); Goopi Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiya (2019 animation, worth a card, no current US offer). Not checked: Hamid, Chillar Party, The Blue Umbrella, Masoom.

Teens and up with family, many at ten with an adult;
A grandfather dies in a Telangana village; the family gathers for the funeral days, old feuds surface, and the ritual crow refuses the offered meal until the house is at peace. Filmfare best film; wholly from inside village life. Teens and up with family, many at ten with an adult; prolonged mourning, a pyre, brief domestic violence, a moneylender's threats.

All ages.
In Tirupati, a homemaker who herself failed tenth grade and her bus-conductor husband have a curious son who gets zeros in maths; demoted a grade and challenged to pass with exactly thirty-five marks, he learns beside his mother, who teaches with kitchen and street examples. A learning struggle as a child-and-family thing, not a diagnosis. National awards for best children's film and best child artist. All ages.

National award for best child artist. Six and up with an adult; the parents are killed in a staged road accident, a hired killer, comic traps.

K. Viswanath, 1986, 161 min
All ages;
Sivayya, left with a cognitive disability by a childhood injury and widely read as autistic, ties a thaali on a young widow because he cannot see why her suffering should continue; the village casts them out and they build a life, framed by his granddaughter recording his memories. India's only Telugu Oscar submission and the film families actually watch about a disabled man with his own will. Caveats: a non-disabled star, and his innocence partly rebukes the non-disabled. All ages; slow, musical.
Sun NXT; Eros Now on Apple.
Runner-up: Mallesham (2019, a Pochampally weaver's son builds a machine to spare his mother's shoulders; shot a year in the village with local artisans; Sun NXT). Set aside: Keedaa Cola (disability played for laughs), Oopiri (inspiration shape), Awe! (diagnosis as twist). No Telugu work with disabled people in the making was found at all.
Disabled or neurodivergent people in the making are confirmed for only a handful: Yomeddine, Ahlan Simsim, Case 404, Khalli Balak Men Zizi, Liza's Story, Sitaare Zameen Par, Berhanu, and consultation on Margarita with a Straw and Taare Zameen Par. Nothing of the kind was found for Chinese, Telugu, or Ethiopian and Eritrean feature film. Tigrinya and Afaan Oromoo are very thin. The Hindi door is weakest for streaming. Eleven library records were re-fetched and confirmed; the others come from the search and were not re-opened.
